FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 22, 2006
The Klezmatics, Woody Guthrie and Coney Island (plus Baseball)
The Klezmatics will celebrate the release of their new album, "Wonder Wheel" (JMG)
at a ceremony commemorating "Woody Guthrie Day" -- by proclamation of the
New York City Government-- on July 25th, 2006. The event will be held before
that day's Brooklyn Cyclones' game at Coney Island's Keyspan Park and will
feature The Klezmatics as well as Nora Guthrie-- Woody's daughter and the
album's executive producer. Nora will throw out the first pitch and the
Klezmatics will lead the crowd in a rendition of "This Land Is Your Land"
during the 7th inning stretch. The celebration caps off a series of
highlights celebrating Woody Guthrie's 94th birthday (July 14th) anchored
by the July 12th national broadcast of the PBS documentary, "Woody Guthrie:
Ain't Got No Home."
"Wonder Wheel" features twelve tracks combining recently discovered Woody
Guthrie lyrics with the ambitious, globetrotting musicianship of The
Klezmatics. Politically charged by Woody's spirit and idealism and
emotionally driven by the band's mastery of world music and Yiddish culture,
the finished record is "just as my father would have wanted," says Nora.
The Brooklyn homecoming for The Klezmatics will kick off a summer and fall
of high profile events for the band including the release of a second album
of never before heard Guthrie works -- entirely composed of Hanukkah songs.
The Klezmatics are currently on tour in Europe and will perform a series of
U.S. dates beginning in late summer.
