The Apples in stereo Announce Vinyl Reissues on Yep Roc!

Beginning on November 3, Yep Roc Records will reissue four long out-of-print vinyl albums by legendary indie artists The Apples in stereo. These vinyl reissues include Tone Soul Evolution on November 3, Her Wallpaper Reverie will follow November 24, with The Discovery of a World Inside the Moone, and Velocity of Sound in January and February 2018, respectively.

Pre-order the reissues bundle HERE.

The band will make a rare, live appearance when they play Athens Popfest 2017 in Athens, GA on August 10, 2017 at The Georgia Theater. The festival schedule is here.

For the first time ever, the band’s second album, Tone Soul Evolution is presented with Robert Schneider and Jonathan Wyner’s original intended master. Offering up “plenty of fine pop music, delivered in such a way that is plenty enjoyable” (A.V Club), this is the master Schneider intended for the world to hear and has finally been unearthed for this pressing. This edition comes as a super deluxe gatefold release featuring the artwork of longtime collaborator Steve Keene.

“With many tracks reminiscent of Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, Wallpaper suggests that Robert Schneider and company have inched past the “B” section of their record collections looking for inspiration (A.V. Club), their third album, Her Wallpaper Reverie, is set for a November 24 reissue. Offering a deeper trip into the psychedelic side of their Beatles/Beach Boys-inspired brand of pop, eight of the 15 tracks are musical interludes that bind the album together.

The Discovery Of A World Inside The Moone was a departure from the band’s previous efforts. Hailed by Pitchfork as “the band’s most diverse outing, and debatably their finest,” their fourth album will be available January 12, 2018. Featuring a production style that was less “wall of sound,” like their previous albums, the album’s bit more raw, reflecting the live sound of the band, with songs that lean more R&B and less psychedelic.

For their fifth album, Velocity of Sound, available February 16, 2018, The Apples in stereo cranked up the guitars and made what Robert Schneider proclaimed is their ode to The Ramones This set of short tunes, most of which clock in at under three minutes, had Pitchforksaying, “if you’ve got a sweet tooth, Velocity of Sound does provide a few irresistible vending machine snacks.“

“Known for eccentric, ‘60s inspired guitar pop” (NPR Music), The Apples in stereo first emerged in the early ‘90s as part of The Elephant 6 collective, a group of musicians with a shared love of lo-fi, neo-psychedelic rock. Led by by singer/songwriter Robert Schneider, the band formed in Denver, CO, and included Jim McIntyre (bass), Hilarie Sidney (drums), and Chris Parfitt (guitar). Shortly after the band’s inception John Hill (guitar) replaced Parfitt and Eric Allen (bass) replaced McIntyre in 1995. The band came to include multi-instrumentalist Bill Doss of the Olivia Tremor Control and later the Circulatory System until his untimely death in 2012.

THE APPLES IN STEREO RELEASE SUPER LIMITED EDITION “SCIENCE FAIRE” TRIPLE 7″ VINYL BOX SET VIA CHUNKLET INDUSTRIES

PRE-ORDER HERE

The Elephant 6 Collective’s family tree is beyond diverse. The first seed to take hold was E6-001, the 1993 self-titled EP by The Apples in stereo (referred to by fans as the “Tidal Wave” EP), then known simply as The Apples. It was recorded and produced on four-track cassette by Elephant 6 co-founder Robert Schneider, who would soon apply his genius to the records by Neutral Milk Hotel, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Minders, Beulah, and countless others in the E6 pantheon.

In 1994, the renamed Apples in stereo released a subsequent EP on the Bus Stop Label along with a peppering of 7″ split singles before their first full length, Fun Trick Noisemaker, came out in 1995. The band has consistently stated that vinyl is the primary medium for, in the words of the Summer 1993 E6 catalog, their “dense chiming classic pop… soaked in fuzz.”

Long out of print, Science Faire collects these earliest recordings in the original format that they were released, and were meant to be heard: on seven-inch vinyl! Complete with posters, stickers and books, Science Faire has been lovingly reproduced. Each side has been stretched to the sonic limit with maximum music per side, just as with the originals.

And as with the original 1996 pressing of this collection, there is never-before-seen artwork (for the “Time for Bed” single) from the early 90’s by Elephant 6 co-founder W. Cullen Hart of The Olivia Tremor Control. As a bonus, the track “Onto Something” is included here which wasn’t included on the original Science Faire release.

All three singles are housed in a special package created by Chunklet’s in-house designer Henry Owings.

Edition of 500.

Robert Schneider to Support E6 Cohorts Neutral Milk Hotel / Publishes Ramanujan Article In The Believer

The Apples in stereo’s Robert Schneider to Support Elephant 6 Cohorts Neutral Milk Hotel on Band’s Final Tour

Publishes Long Article on Mythical Mathematical Genius Srinivasa Ramanujan in McSweeney’s The Believer

(Decatur, GA): The Apples in stereo’s Robert Schneider will provide direct support for Elephant 6 friends Neutral Milk Hotel on several dates over the summer, for the last dates of their long-running reunion tour. Schneider produced, engineered, arranged and performed on both Neutral Milk Hotel albums, and is a lifelong collaborator of NMH leader Jeff Mangum. This is his first tour since apparently leaving the music scene three years ago to pursue a Ph.D. in Mathematics at Emory University, studying under world-renowned number theorist Ken Ono.

“I have missed playing shows, and traveling with my friends,” says Schneider. “This is going to be awesome.” Dates below.

But the intervening years have been busy ones for Schneider. This month, he and bandmate Benjamin Phelan have published a long article in The Believer about Schneider’s trip to India to investigate a mathematical super-genius named Srinivasa Ramanujan. (In fact, it’s Ramanujan who’s responsible for Schneider’s musical hiatus–after hearing Ramanujan’s incredible story, he put the band on hold and moved to Georgia to pursue a Ph.D. in number theory.) The article is just as bold and adventurous as anything released under the auspices of Elephant 6. While on tour for 2010’s Travellers in Space and Time, Schneider and Phelan, a new Apple recruited for the tour, who happened also to be a magazine writer (New York Times Book Review, Harpers, Best American Science Writing 2009), discovered a joint love of mathematics, and developed a unique shared perspective on the meaning of Ramanujan’s work. In an article for The Believer, “Encounter with the Infinite,” Schneider and Phelan relate their intricate vision, weaving Schneider and Ramanujan’s story together to create a psychedelic travelogue through Southern India and an inquiry into the nature of infinity. Gravitation Generator: Steve Keene “The Most Productive Artist of All Time”

Steve Keene at his studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn

Steve Keene-Profile12503 web“There needs to be a Johnny Appleseed of art, and there is and it’s Steve Keene.” – The Apples in stereo’s Robert Schneider*

Steve Keene may be the most productive artist of all time. The Williamsburg, Brooklyn based artist, with over 250,000 (two-hundred fifty thousand) pieces created to date, is perhaps the most mission-driven ever. Unproductive simply isn’t allowed into his world – it’s impractical. Continue reading “Gravitation Generator: Steve Keene “The Most Productive Artist of All Time””

The Apples in Stereo’s Robert Schneider Pursues Graduate Study in Mathematics

The Apples in Stereo’s Robert Schneider Pursues Graduate Study in Mathematics

(Decatur, Georgia): Robert Schneider—The Apples in stereo bandleader, Elephant 6 co-founder and influential record producer/engineer (Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control, Beulah)—enters the PhD program in Mathematics at Emory University, to study under world-class number theorist Ken Ono.

Schneider obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Kentucky in May, having studied mathematics for a number of years while simultaneously producing ambitious indie records and touring the world. In recent years he has devised a “Non-Pythagorean” musical scale  based on logarithms used on The Apples in stereo albums New Magnetic Wonder (2007) and Travellers in Space and Time (2010), composed a score based on prime numbers for a stage play by mathematician Andrew Granville, experimented with a mind-controlled synthesizer of his own invention, created a board game Al-Jabar based on group theory with fellow UK student Cyrus Hettle, spoken at numerous mathematics conferences and universities, and engaged in other math and science related projects.

“I realized the beauty of mathematics in my studio while repairing a sixteen-track tape machine, with schematic diagrams spread around me on the floor,” says Schneider. “I came across Ohm’s Law in a book on electronics, the equation that describes the flow of electricity in circuits, and it blew my mind. Somehow, this simple equation was responsible for the things I found most magical in life—electric guitars, analog synthesizers, stereophonic sound and the joy of making music with my friends.

“To me, my interest in mathematics feels similar to my interest in music: exploring beautiful patterns and ideas beyond the reach of words. Of course, I won’t stop writing songs, recording and playing shows, but I feel a deep need to immerse myself in the mysteries of number theory. Ken Ono is one of the most exciting, creative mathematicians in the whole world and I can’t wait to stretch my imagination under his guidance.”
